FAQ (Caridina)

🦐Caridina Shrimp FAQ🦐

Care • Breeding • Water Stability

Are Caridina shrimp beginner-friendly?

  • Caridina shrimp are not recommended for beginners. They require tighter water control, lower TDS, and a more mature setup than Neocaridina.

How many Caridina shrimp should I start with?

  • We recommend 8–15 shrimp. Larger groups improve breeding success and reduce stress.

What tank size is best?

  • A 10-gallon or larger tank is strongly recommended. Larger volumes provide better stability, which is critical for Caridina shrimp.

Do Caridina shrimp need a heater?

  • Yes. Most Caridina thrive between 68–72°F with minimal temperature fluctuation. Consistency matters more than warmth.

🦐Water Parameters & Stability🦐

What are ideal water parameters for Caridina shrimp?

Caridina require soft, acidic water:

  • pH: 5.5–6.5
  • GH: 4–6
  • KH: 0–1
  • TDS: 90–140 ppm
  • Temperature: 68–72°F

These ranges must be stable, not constantly adjusted.

Why is stability critical for Caridina shrimp?

  • Caridina shrimp have very little tolerance for swings in pH, TDS, or temperature. Even small, rapid changes can cause stress, failed molts, or losses.

Tap water or RO/DI water?

  • RO/DI water is strongly recommended.
Caridina shrimp require precise mineral control and do best when RO/DI water is remineralized specifically for Caridina.

How often should water changes be done?

Small, consistent changes only:

  • 5–10% weekly or bi-weekly
Avoid large or frequent changes that can destabilize parameters.

🦐Substrate & Setup🦐

Do Caridina shrimp need active substrate?

  • Yes. Most Caridina species require active buffering substrates to maintain proper pH and KH levels.

Are plants required?

  • Plants are highly recommended. Mosses and slow-growing plants help stabilize water, increase biofilm, and improve baby shrimp survival.

What filter works best?

  • Sponge filters are ideal. They provide gentle flow, excellent biological filtration, and are safe for baby shrimp.

🦐Acclimation🦐

Why is acclimation so important for Caridina shrimp?

  • Caridina shrimp are extremely sensitive to parameter changes. Improper acclimation is one of the most common causes of early losses.

What’s the best acclimation method?

  • Slow drip acclimation over 90–120 minutes is recommended for Caridina shrimp.

🦐Feeding🦐

What do Caridina shrimp eat?

  • They feed on biofilm and should be supplemented with high-quality shrimp foods designed for Caridina, with protein fed sparingly.

How often should I feed?

  • 1–2 times per week is usually sufficient. Overfeeding can quickly lead to water quality issues.

🦐Breeding🦐

How do Caridina shrimp breed?

  • Females carry eggs for 4–5 weeks before releasing fully formed baby shrimp.

Do baby Caridina shrimp need special care?

  • They rely heavily on biofilm and microorganisms. Mature tanks, moss, and stable conditions are essential.

Why aren’t my Caridina shrimp breeding?

Common reasons include:

  • Unstable parameters
  • New or immature tank
  • Incorrect substrate
  • Overfeeding or underfeeding

Caridina breeding success is directly tied to patience and consistency.

🦐Troubleshooting🦐

Why are my Caridina shrimp dying?

Most losses are caused by:

  • TDS or pH swings
  • Inadequate acclimation
  • Improper remineralization
  • Large water changes

Random deaths almost always indicate instability.

Is molting normal?

  • Yes. Regular molting is healthy. Failed molts often signal mineral imbalance or sudden parameter shifts.

🦐Our Core Philosophy🦐

Stability > Chasing Numbers

Caridina shrimp reward patience. Slow changes, consistent maintenance, and mature systems lead to long-term success and strong breeding colonies.
